NBA Braille Music Catalog Now Online

The catalog of braille music and music textbooks for purchase from the National Braille Association is now on the NBA's Web site, www.nba.org. Once on the site, go to the link for NBA Sercies and you will find the catalog link a few lines down. Built up primarily as a result of student's requests, the NBA's music collection has pieces categorized by instrument and some theory books. If you are looking for the much used "Twenty-four Italian Songs and Arias" or well known Mozart concerti, the NBA is where to find them. Funding for making the catalog available online was provided by Sigma Alpha Iota, a fraternity devoted to music education worldwide.

"Rise Up Singing" Now in Braille at Network Libraries

Many of us have been waiting for a song book in braille, and now one is here. "Rise Up Singing" was produced for NLS and is available from regional libraries and on Web-Braille. The book is described in the NLS catalog as a "Collection of twelve hundred song favorites for
use at camp, school, church, or home. Selections cover topics
such as America, ecology, freedom, good times, hard times,
home and family, love, peace, and religion (hymns and
spirituals). Includes words and chords for each song.Introduction by Pete Seeger. 1988."
This mamoth transcription project was done by National Braille Press. It follows the format of the print, not containing music for melodies, but providing chords and a system for knowing on which syllables to use them. Before you consider taking it on a picnic, consider the size--ten large volumes. A title index in Volume Ten makes finding songs fairly easy. It may be ideal for downloading to a braille notetaker.

Petition for Pro Tools Access

From "Top Tech Tidbits for Thursday", August 17, 2006: 3) Pro Tools is the leading program used by recording studio engineers, musicians and producers. Its manufacturer has not chosen to implement the accessibility provisions that Apple has built into the latest editions of the Mac. You can sign a petition to urge them to do so. http://www.protoolspetition.org/
